I often come across people from other parts of the world who don't know what the word Provost or Lord Provost means.  In most parts of the world including England they would be called a Mayor or Lord Mayor.  Provost is the Mayor of a town and a Lord Provost is the equivalent of a Lord Mayor of a city.  So the Lord Provost in Scotland bears the same office as a Lord Mayor and represents the city that they hold office in.
