Scottish Women in Black 2006

The Women in Black were first seen and photographed by me outside St Giles Cathedral on the lead up to the second Gulf War.  Since then they have stood at the East end of Princes Street on every Saturday afternoon with their banners.  The Women in Black don't use megaphones or shout.  They stand there in silent protest in all types of weather with the banners which are very effective.  The people passing by can't miss the message that they are putting across.  This is a mixture of women who have a firm belief in what they stand for, they stand there in silence to mourn all victims of war where their silence is visible to all, and for that they must be admired for their beliefs and the way they go about their protest.

Standing like statues in silence, but all seeing

A policy used by many countries

Spelling out the truth

The paper with the story

Women in Black started in 1988 when Israeli and Palestinian women stood together in vigil in Jerusalem to end the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.  The international movement Women in Black was awarded the Millennium peace prize by the United Nations in 2001.
