Festivals of the Sea Held in Edinburgh
Royal Yacht Britannia arriving in Leith Docks as its final resting place, a boating festival at Newhaven Harbour and the Festival of Sea held in Leith Docks with displays. Once Scotland was famed as a seafaring nation. Boats and craft of all types have travelled all over the world from these destinations. Scotland was famed for its shipbuilding, its seamanship and fishing, but like most ports worldwide, Scotland has had to change with the progression of time.
Edinburgh has some of the finest museums and art galleries in the world. The Royal Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street has always been a place of education for the people of Edinburgh where displays are exhibitated along with various exhibitions. The art galleries in Edinburgh also have a fantastic collection of art that people from around the world come to see. The custodians of the museums and art galleries make sure that Scotland's history and treasures are looked after for the nation.
Edinburgh International Book Festival
Edinburgh is host to the Edinburgh International Book Festival each year. This is where some of the worlds greatest literary artist gather with their new works of literature. The tents are set up where readings of their new works are given to the thousands of people who go to this festival each year, some hoping to get a glimpse of their favourite writers along with some other famous faces.
Edinburgh has always been a city of festivals, cavalcades and Gala's. The Miners Gala played a large part in Edinburgh's history until it came to an end when the mines were shut down. The Festival Cavalcade is an annual event that heralds the beginning of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and all the other festivals that come to life each year. The Edinburgh Mela is another event that has become part of Edinburgh's annual events where thousands of people gather to get a flavour of foods and entertainment from all cultures
City life in Edinburgh covers the many other events that go on in the capital city. As a capital city, Edinburgh has many high profile visitors coming from all over the world to visit the new Scottish Parliament. It also holds annual events to remember the war dead along with a whole host of other annual events throughout the year.
Hogmanay, New Year Held in Edinburgh
Hogmanay means New Year in Scotland. Edinburgh started its organised Hogmanay events from 1993 into 1994. Since the first organised Hogmanay started in Edinburgh, they have become bigger and better with people from all over the world trying to get a ticket for this event. Before the organised events began, the people of Edinburgh would bring in the New Year at the Tron Kirk on the Royal Mile where some people still gather as a tradition.
Hairstyles being created at The Hogmany Events in Edinburgh
At the Night Afore in Edinburgh, there is street theatre. This is where the hairdressers and stylists work. They work away all night creating unseen hair designs so that the visitors to Edinburgh can look their best for Hogmanay. Thousands of people watch what is going on as the hairdressers and stylist clip and style the models who have been selected from the audience. This is so that they can experience what it's like to get the big star treatment.
The Mardi Gras and Jazz Festival
The Mardi Gras and Jazz on a Summers Day are part of the Jazz and Blues Festival that is held in Edinburgh annually. The Mardi Gras and Jazz on a Summers Day are events that are free, bringing Jazz and Blues music to the streets of Edinburgh which makes it an excellent day for people to enjoy themselves to the sounds of music floating across the streets of the city. The Mardi Gras is a day to be able to sit at a table in the Grassmarket with a meal or drink listening to some of the worlds greatest jazz musicians. Jazz on a Summers day lets you sit in the Ross Bandstand under the shadow of Edinburgh Castle listening to the best in Jazz and Blues music live.
Like any other city in the world Edinburgh is on the move seven days a week, twenty four hours a day. Roads have to be repaired, buildings have to be built and work has to be done. Edinburgh also has a vibrant entertainment industry with cinemas, venues for bands, theatres along with many other forms of free time activities. These are the signs of a living city where people work, rest and play.
Each year the General Assembly for the Church of Scotland takes place in the capital city of Scotland along with many other events. Scotland is a country of diversity and tolerance and hopes to remain that way. Every two years Edinburgh holds the Pride Scotia event, while St Giles Cathedral hosts the Festival Service and the St Andrew's Day Service. Edinburgh also holds the Holocaust Memorial Day service along with many other services throughout the year.
Political Rallies in Edinburgh
Political Rallies are part of any democracy and Edinburgh is no different when people feel that they are not being listened too. Over the years the people of Scotland have protested on many issues such as education cuts, the war in Iraq, water privatisation, the criminal justice bill, pensions and many other issues. In Edinburgh there have been many protests with very little trouble. Most people who protest want their voice to be heard without any trouble, and Edinburgh has been successful in restraint on the issues that effect them.
Edinburgh has been host to many large events over the years. In 1992 Edinburgh was host to the European Summit at Holyrood Palace. In 1997 Edinburgh was host to the Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. And the start of Devolution and the opening of the new Scottish Parliament. All have played a large part in Scotland's history.
A city view of Edinburgh shows Edinburgh in many ways, the Edinburgh Castle, Leith Docks and many views from some of the highest points in Edinburgh. When you look at Edinburgh in the many ways that it presents itself in different light, you can't help falling in love with this city that has so much to offer.
Some Charity Event Held in Edinburgh
Many people worldwide work hard to raise money for the charities of their choice, and the people of Edinburgh are no different when it comes to raising money to help those less fortunate than themselves. Some put in what they can afford while others get involved with annual events like the Great Scottish Walk and work in groups where it can be a fun day out. Each and every one wherever they are from, are the people that can make a difference to other people's lives by recognising the needs of other people no matter where they are.
