So You Think Your Funny Awards 2010

James Kirk Is Funny!

2010 So You Think You’re Funny? winner announced…

26 August 2010,  Paisley born James Kirk beat off stiff competition from a further eight of Britain’s strongest up and coming comic talents to be crowned the winner of Edinburgh Fringe Festival’s best stand-up comedy  competition So You Think You’re Funny? 2010.  The only Scottish contestant of the night James, was followed in second place by Liam Williams and third place was awarded to Rob Beckett. Each act had just seven minutes to prove just how funny they were. After tense and extremely tough minutes of deliberation from the country’s most experienced judges including Gilded Balloon’s legendary Artistic Director, Karen Koren and Australia’s finest, Tim Minchin, a stand out winner emerged.

One time So You Think You’re Funny? competitor and TV funny man Rufus Hound compered tonight’s final alongside a roaring audience. This year’s winner has not only won the coveted title but has also won £2000 and a trip to perform at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival. Now in its twenty-third year, the renowned competition has seen winners past include Peter Kay, Rhona Cameron, Lee Mack, Tommy Tiernan, Miles Jupp, Rob Rouse, Dylan Moran and 2009 winner Ivo Graham…to name but a few.

This year the search for the best comedy newcomer took competition organisers from the Gilded Balloon to Bath, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Brighton and London.  A selected shortlist including finalists Rob Beckett, Laura Carr, Alex Clissold Jones, Pete Dobbing, James Kirk, Romesh Ranganathan, Matt Richardson, Chris Turner and Liam Williams all pulled out their very best stand-up skills in a bid to impress.

Rob Beckett

24 year old Rob Beckett grew up in South East London with his four brothers where being silly and having a laugh was the main objective. Coming from a big family it was a fight to be heard and this has led to Rob possessing all of the character traits of a classic middle child. Stand up comedy is Rob’s favourite thing and he wants to do as much as possible.

Liam Williams

Liam is 22 years old. He studied English at Cambridge and was a member of the Cambridge Footlights. He is directing the Footlights at this year’s Fringe and is performing in the Lunchtime Club at the Tron as well as with his sketch troupe ‘Sheeps’ on the Five Pound Fringe.
