The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland
On Saturday 11th July 2009, three young cellists from East Lothian will join
67 others to perform a one-off lunchtime concert at The Queens Hall, Edinburgh
with The National Children’s Orchestra’s of Scotland.
This
will be the first time that a public performance will be held following the
annual NCOS residential summer course during July. In the past the orchestra has only ever
performed publicly at Easter and adding this extra public concert is real
testimony to the talent, commitment and hard work of the
youngsters.
Conductor
Julian Clayton said:
“This will be NCOS’s first public
summer concert. Giving the young musicians the opportunity to perform in public
after they have worked so hard during their summer course is very gratifying,
for both for the orchestra and for their tutors. The musicians will have only
one week to prepare and rehearse very challenging repertoire. The knowledge that
they will be performing it to members of the public, in the formidable
surroundings of The Queen’s Hall, will inject a greater energy into the course
and the musicians will feel that extra push to perform
well.”
14 year
old violinist, Jessica Hui from the Corstorphine area Edinburgh is excited about
playing in the ensemble; “The ensemble is really amazing to be in because you
feel like you are part of a body. You
spend the whole of your music career thinking you work hard and then you come
into a large ensemble and what you've done is only a small fraction of what
everyone else has achieved. It means so
much to see what working in a team really means. It's just not enough to listen to yourself
and stick your head in the music - you have to be aware of what everyone else is
doing. Sometimes I just want to stop
playing and listen to everyone else because it sounds so good!

The National Children’s
Orchestra of Scotland
In April
1996, NYOS formed the National Children's Orchestra of Scotland for young
musicians aged 8 to 14. The artistic standard achieved and the attention
received confirmed the future for this exciting project.
The
inaugural public NCOS concert was held in 1997 in The Queen’s Hall,
Edinburgh.
Auditions for the National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland are held annually in November, around Scotland. Those who are selected to join the orchestra will attend a preliminary residential weekend training course held in February, where students are introduced to a repertoire of around 2-3 pieces.
In April – during the Easter Holidays – all members of the orchestra attend a residential week, where the students rehearse the repertoire to perfection, working with an internationally renowned conductor. This week long course culminates in a tour of 2 high profile venues in Scotland, often including Perth Concert Hall and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. These concerts are open to the general public and are always well attended and critically acclaimed.
The 2006
NYOS Spring Concerts featured NCOS in a joint concert with Camerata
Scotland. This successful venture
showcased the work of NYOS from the very young to those verging on the
profession. NCOS performed under the direction of Peter Stark in repertoire that
included Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel Overture, Webern’s Passcaglia
op. 1 and Arnold’s Symphony No.5.
In
Spring 2008 Peter Stark conducted the orchestra once more, in a joint concert
with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. This innovative collaborative concert opened
up both classical and Jazz music to new audiences. The concert format was such a success that a
similar format is planned for the NYOS Spring Concerts
2009.
