Y Tu Mamá También was significant of a new era for Mexican cinema when it was released in 2001, launching the international careers of director Alfonso (Children of Men) Cuarón and actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. Alfonso wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay with his brother Carlos, who steps behind the camera for the first time with Rudo & Cursi. With the quartet reuniting - Alfonso is in the producer's chair on this occasion - it's no surprise that the film has already won high praise around the globe. The comedy follows the eponymous brothers' rise to soccer stardom, from poverty to penthouses. Critic Roger Ebert was unequivocal in his praise of the movie, calling it, "the sort of high-level buddy movie every national cinema needs." The appearance of award-winning actor Bernal at EIFF is sure to set a few pulses racing, as much for his looks as his prodigious talent. Co-star Luna will be just as recognisable to audiences, following his apperarances in Milk, The Terminal and Open Range.
