Pipers Trail 2008

The Trail is the physical journey we are travelling through Scotland a distance of approximately 470 miles. We start in the Shetlands on 17 June and travel from Lerwick to Kirkwall on Orkney and then on to Stromness.

Once landing at Scrabster on the mainland on 20 June, the Trail will follow a route that takes them through Wick, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Stirling, Glasgow and Ayr and many other locations along the way to end in Edinburgh on 25 July. At a number of locations the Trail will stop and put on performances including a mini theatrical piece.

A piper or drummer or a whole band can lead the Trail on its way and we want to encourage you to come and join the Trail and why not bid to lead a chosen mile. Whether you wish to pipe or drum or even just walk with the pipes and drums for a mile or two, come and join us and whilst you’re walking why not get yourself sponsored and raise money for charity whilst you are doing so.

Pipers, drummers and walkers can bid for their chosen mile for each mile of the route from Lerwick to Edinburgh Castle. The bidder becomes the ‘owner’ of that mile and will be responsible for leading that mile and can co-ordinate the other players and participants on that mile.

You are responsible for getting yourself to the start of your chosen mile, sustaining yourself on route and recovering yourself at the end. Even as a walker you can direct the pipers and drummers on that mile. The owner of each mile will be free to select the tunes to be played, the format of his section and dictate the scale of performance. You are free to raise money for the charity of your choosing if you want, just get yourself sponsored for taking part in the Trail. Some of the larger bands might wish to block-book certain key miles.

The Army in Scotland, with local police will provide support and traffic control on the route plus the essential co-ordination to deliver continuity. HQ 51 (Scottish) Brigade will co-ordinate the journey as a whole.
