The Edge of Love

Written by the acclaimed Welsh/Scottish playwright Sharman MacDonald, and starring her phenomenal daughter Keira Knightley, this is a simply gorgeous period romance, charged with provocative undercurrents about art, war and gender. Knightley (never better, nor more beautiful) plays Vera Philips, childhood sweetheart of the poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys). When the two meet again in Blitz-ravaged London, Dylan's married to free spirit Caitlin (a wonderful Sienna Miller) and Vera's caught the eye of noble soldier William (Cillian Murphy) – but their chemistry still crackles ... The resulting tangle of affections is handled with stunning assurance and sensitivity by director John Maybury (Love is the Devil; The Jacket). No mere costume potboiler, this film proves as passionate and complex as its characters, taking on the notion of the artist’s muse; the place of artists and intellectuals in time of war; and, devastatingly, the endless psychic reverbations of shell shock. Stirring, insightful and bursting with life, The Edge of Love proves a triumph for all concerned.
