Giovanni, who is originally from Venezuela, succeeded over Dmitry Rasul-Kareyev, clarinet, also from the Royal Academy of Music in London, and Eugene Nakamura, violin, from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Giovanni gave stunning performances of Brahms’ Sonata No.3 in D minor, Op 108 for Violin and Piano (1st movement – Allegro) and Ginastera’s Pampeana No.1, Rhapsody for Violin and Piano.

A panel, made up of acclaimed composer Rory Boyle, Francis Cummings (Director of Music, St Mary’s Music School Edinburgh) and Lewis Morrison (Head of Woodwind, The Edinburgh Academy) judged the finalists’ performances and awarded Giovanni the top prize.

Giovanni received £3000 to further his career in professional music. He said: “At present I have an instrument and a bow kindly on loan from the Royal Academy of Music. However, I am aware that I am approaching the time when I need to buy an instrument of my own. Therefore I will use this Award towards the cost of buying a violin bow that will see me through my professional career.”

Born in Venezuela in 1986, Giovanni Guzzo began playing the violin at the age of six.  In 1999, he was the 1st prize winner of the XII National Violin Competition Juan Bautista Plaza in Venezuela, which led to performances in major venues nationwide. He continued his studies with Zakhar Bron at the Escuela Superioir de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid and in 2002 he was granted a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where he is currently a student of Maurice Hasson. Since arriving in London, he has worked with prestigious musicians such as Sir Colin Davies, Maxim Vengerov, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and has been awarded numerous prizes, including the MBF Music Education Award 2004, Winifred Solo Violin prize (RAM), Gold medal at the Marlow Music Festival 2006

Dmitry Rasul-Kareyev received the second prize (£1500) and Eugene Nakamura the third prize (£1000).

This year’s NYOS Staffa Award has been sponsored by The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Scotland, who hosted the event at the recently refurbished Freemasons’ Hall in Edinburgh on the eve of an international conference on Freemasonry.
